Since 1983, Bhartiya Jan Utthan Parishad (BJUP) has walked alongside some of the most underserved communities of Bihar and Jharkhand. Our work begins with a simple belief: people are not problems to be solved but partners in building a better future. When communities are given the knowledge, confidence and institutions to take charge of their own development, change becomes lasting.
The challenges facing a rural family rarely come one at a time. A child who leaves school early is often a child whose family has an unstable income. A mother who cannot access health services may also have no say in household decisions. A village without clean water faces illness, lost workdays and missed school. For this reason, BJUP does not treat these problems in isolation. Our work is organised into five thematic areas that are deeply connected and strengthen one another:
- Child Protection & Education
- Livelihood & Skill Development
- Health & WASH
- Women Empowerment
- Sustainability
In every theme, we work with community members, Self-Help Groups, Panchayati Raj Institutions, schools, government departments, CSR partners, foundations and civil society networks. Our programmes in Aspirational Districts and Blocks are aligned with the national priority of accelerating development in the regions that need it most. Wherever we work, we aim to leave behind stronger people and institutions that can sustain the change on their own.
